Tree Care and Safety

Tree Care & Safety

Choosing and cutting your own tree is not only a fun and festive Christmas activity to do with family and friends, it also insures the freshest possible tree.  Trees sold on many retail lots may have come great distances, and been exposed to drying winds in transit; many have been cut weeks in advance.  As fresh as our trees are, we still recommend that you follow suggested guidelines from the Virginia Cooperative Extension www.ext.vt.edu/pubs/forestry for both storing and setting up your tree.  These simple steps and reminders insure that your tree remains fresh, safe and beautiful throughout the duration of the Holiday season.

1.  When you’re storing, and again ready to set up your tree, ALWAYS MAKE A FRESH CUT ACROSS THE BOTTOM, only about 1 inch is necessary.  This is crucial as a fresh cut removes any clogged wood that may not readily absorb water.

2.  Next, place the tree in PLENTY OF WATER.  Water – with nothing added – is all the tree needs.  Depending upon the size, species, and location of the tree, a tree may absorb a gallon or more of water in the first day, so it should be checked frequently and re-watered as necessary.  DO NOT LET THE TREE STAND OR BUCKET RUN DRY!  If this happens, the tree’s sap will seal the cut and prevent it from absorbing water…the tree will then dry out.  If the tree does become dried out, it may not be able to adequately absorb moisture once it is re-watered, and it will shed its needles prematurely.  If you do need to store your tree for a period of time before setting up, also remember to keep it in a cool, shaded location.

That’s it!  As long as the tree is able to absorb and transpire water, it is reasonably fire-resistant.  More safety tips…the Christmas tree should be located in a safe place, preferably near wall or corner where it is not likely to be knocked over.  Keeping the tree away from heat sources such as hot air ducts, wood stoves, fireplaces, etc., will help to preserve freshness and lessen fire danger.  Similarly, light cords and connections used in decorating the tree should be in good working condition, and not overloaded.   Lights should always be turned off at bedtime or when leaving for an extended period of time.

Bottom line, a fresh cut and plenty of water is all it takes to keep a newly cut Christmas tree fresh and safe throughout the Holiday season.

HAVE A SAFE AND MERRY CHRISTMAS!
